Why
is it that tattoos, dreads, or any type of body modification art is
looked down upon by the rest of society? More importantly what does
our physical appearance have to do with how we perform in the
professional world? It is shown that a person with a body
modification has a slimmer chance of being hired for high status
professions and also customer service professions. Some
companies like Walt Disney World, SeaWorld Orlando and Wal-Mart even
have written policies that ban their employees from having any
visible tattoos, or extreme hair color. I myself am not permitted the
freedom to have an extreme look of any kind; because in the musical
theatre world you need to be a clean slate so that casting directors
can look at you and mold you into the roles which they are casting
for. This seems backwards to me because in an arts profession
personal expression is a part of the work which you do as an artist.
In any circumstance, it is my belief that there is nothing a little
liquid foundation can't cover, and in reality what you look like on
the outside is not a factor in how you perform in a work setting.
